In the middle of the sleepless nights and long summer days of this Ramadan, when the Muslim community is brimming with Iftars, food drives and Taraweeh prayers, a group of activists came together last Saturday in Downtown Chicago to discuss civic engagement. The Council of Islamic Organization of Greater Chicago (CIOGC) invited MPower Change, Justice for All and Center for New Community, among others to its office for Iftar to participate in a strategic discussion about grassroots organizing, voter registration and GOTV efforts in this critical presidential year. One of the key dates for increasing participation in the political process is the National Voter Registration Day (NVRD) on September 27, 2016. Nationwide, masjids are encouraged to hold registration drives on that day to build excitement. Visit the NVRD website for additional resources.
