This year’s Illinois Muslim Action Day on April 19, 2016 marked a historical moment for Muslims as April 19 was designated as Muslim Action Day in Illinois with the adoption of SR1748. Sponsored by Senator Mattie Hunter (D-Chicago), SR1748 is the state’s first anti-hate resolution that specifically addresses Muslims. CIOGC took “Take on Hate” to Springfield, where students from Universal School, Islamic Foundation School and senators joined forces. Celebrate by sharing the story and “like” to take on hate. Stand with CIOGC in solidarity.
IMAD 2016 Kicked off with Press Conference

Muslim leaders stood in solidarity with Illinois senators to denounce hate and violence and reinstate the Illinois Muslim American Advisory Council (renounced in January 2015), so that our community could once again dialogue with the governor’s office. CIOGC and high school students met with 13 lawmakers to lobby for legislation. Bills affecting CIOGC member organizations to broader social services issues were addressed by speakers. Media coverage included Fox News, Atlanta Daily and Illinois Senate Democrats.
Following the Chicago “Take on Hate” Rally at MAS, CIOGC took its legislative agenda to Springfield. CIOGC met with the local Muslim community and members of Islamic Society of Greater Springfield.
