On March 11, 2025, CIOGC held its Annual Muslim-Methodist Iftar Dinner, a beautiful evening of dialogue and friendship. This year’s theme, Seeking Peace Through Sharing and Caring, reminded us of the importance of extending a helping hand, offering a listening ear, and standing in solidarity with those around us.
Across our faith traditions, compassion and service to others are not just values we hold dear, but are at the very heart of our faith. They guide us to build strong, supportive communities where we care for those in need. We are deeply grateful to the Islamic Foundation Villa Park for offering such a welcoming space, where we could come together in reflection and connection.
The evening was made even more special by the reflections of Bishop Dan Scherwin, presiding bishop of the Northern Illinois Conference of the Methodist Church; Rev. Jane Eesley; and Imam Hisham Qaisi. Their words inspired us all to continue working together, living out our faith, and supporting each other in our shared pursuit of peace and service.
Rev. Eesley, the Advocacy Coordinator at the Methodist Liaison Office, Currently based in Jerusalem, shared a moving message about the power of friendship and shared values, drawing from her experiences in the Holy City. Joined by her Palestinian Muslim friends, Nafiza and Dr. Salim, who dedicate their lives to serving those in need in refugee camps, she emphasized that despite differences in faith, their work is guided by the same core principles. “There are some things we see differently, but that never gets in the way of our friendship, and what is at the core is that respect,” remarked Eesley. In a place that is constantly under siege and where the community often faces oppression, their dedication to service is a powerful example of how empathy and respect can transcend divisions.
“My hope for you are these same kinds of friendships, the same kind of caring because of your faith, the same kind of welcome for one another,” concluded Eesley.
As we continue our efforts to live out our faith, may we build bridges of understanding, compassion, and kindness, reaching those who need it most.
