This Thanksgiving will be difficult for Muslim and Arab American families. Celebrating over lavish meals feels almost sinful as we witness the ethnic cleansing of our dear brothers and sisters in Palestine. Channel your grief into action. CIOGC has prepared a checklist of actionable items for Thanksgiving to remember Palestine and advocate for the voiceless, all while you spend quality time with your loved ones.

Thanksgiving Day (11/23)

On Thanksgiving day, do one or more of the following suggested activities to educate yourself, your family, and show gratitude for all that Palestine and Palestinians contribute to the world.

Quran & Dua Project: Visit themuslimvoice.us this page is not only a resource for you to contact your Representatives and Elected Officials, but it also features a challenge for every Muslim in the Chicago-land area to channel our grief collectively by supplicating to Allah swt. Participate with your local masjid to complete as many Qurans as possible for the sake of out Palestinian brothers and sisters. The word of Allah can heal and it can also change the state of the current crisis. Let’s work together to read Quran as a community and as an Ummah.

Feed a Family: Calculate the cost of your Thanksgiving meal and donate the same amount to the following organizations with the intention of feeding a family: Islamic Relief USA, Palestine Children’s Relief Fund, or Palestinian American Medical Association.

Find other resources here for things you can do Thanksgiving weekend:

Black Friday (11/24)

Call local, state, and federal elected officials to demand a ceasefire and end to US aid for genocide. Let’s make it the largest phone banking day yet! Commit an hour before or after Jummah. Click here to find your Elected Officials contact information!

Small Business Saturday (11/25)

Spend your hard earned dollars ethically and support a Palestinian business! Perhaps this is the day you purchase the book, artwork, or the dates and olives that you will use to showcase Palestinian culture in your community.

Some Chicago-Based Palestinian Owned Businesses to check out: Jerusalem Cafe (Lombard, IL), Al-Bawadi Grill (Bridgeview, IL & Niles, IL), Boba Heaven, Eiffel Waffle, Watan Bakery (Bridgeview, IL), and Fattoush (Bridgeview, IL). Click here for more businesses that support Palestine!

Education Sunday (11/26)

Use this day to learn about the rich history of Palestine and draft your emails for tomorrow’s email campaign.

Cyber Monday (11/27)

The same plan as Black Friday but this time we jam the networks with emails and DMs/PMs on social media to the same officials we call on Friday. Every Muslim American is requested to send a minimum of ten emails. Click here for more information or here for a pre-written email you can send to your officials.

Giving Tuesday (11/28)

Participate in #GivingTuesday by donating to a cause that supports Palestine.

Organizations to consider donating to:

– Palestine Children’s Relief Fund provides free medical care to thousands of injured and ill children yearly who lack local access to care within the local health care system.

– American Muslims for Palestine (AMP) is a national education and grassroots-based organization based in the USA. They are committed to delivering good education to the American public on Palestinian history, culture, and religious heritage.

– Penny Appeal USA helps provide emergency aid to Gaza including food, clean water, medical assistance, and shelter during this critical time.

– United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine in the Near East (UNRWA) services encompass primary and vocational education, primary health care, relief and social services, infrastructure and camp improvement, microfinance and emergency response, including in situations of armed conflict.

O Allah, help and protect the people of Palestine. O Allah, ease their pain and suffering. O Allah, bestower of Mercy, bestow your mercy on them. O Allah, open people’s hearts to give in this time of crisis. O Allah, help those who are in need, wherever they may be.”

May Allah SWT protect our dear brothers and sisters in Palestine and may those who have been martyred enter the highest level of Paradise.
