List of relatives exempted from ‘Muslim Ban’ expanded by federal judge

Muslim BanOn July 13, U.S. District Judge Derrick Watson in Hawaii ruled that grandparents, grandchildren, uncles, aunts, and other relatives should be exempt from President Trump’s March 6 ban on travelers from six Muslim-majority countries. The judge also ordered exemptions for refugees who have been verified by settlement agencies working on their placement in the United States.

Last month, the Supreme Court revived elements of Trump’s executive order, upholding the ban on travelers from the six countries affected: Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen. While the Trump administration asked the Supreme Court to overturn Watson’s ruling, Hawaii’s court filing included a copy of a State Department order to implement Watson’s ruling on July 14.
