6/7/17 – CIOGC supports Senate resolution to protect immigrants and refugees

CIOGC joined the Council on American-Islamic Relations’ Chicago office (CAIR-Chicago) for a press conference on June 5 to address Senate Resolution 0404 (SR0404), which would end state funding on federal immigration mandates. This resolution provides that the state of Illinois would cease expending state resources for the enforcement of federal immigration laws. Senator Daniel Biss, who is the sponsor of the resolution, was in attendance and said, “We, here in the State of Illinois have an obligation to stand up for our values.” He also spoke making Illinois safer for immigrants and refugees, by creating a more welcoming Illinois. CIOGC’s Civic Engagement Committee Chair, Aliya Husain said, “We stand here as citizens… to say no to the expenditure of any state resources in support of these immigration enforcement tactics.” The resolution has been referred to the Assignments Committee in the Senate. We urge the Muslim community to contact your Senator and tell them to support SR0404 so it can pass through committee and become a bill!
