WHAT: Justice for Nabra Candlelight Vigil
WHEN: Thursday, June 22, 2017 from 6pm-8pm
WHERE: 50 W Adams St, Chicago, IL 60603-5107, United States
The murder of our young Muslim sister Nabra Hassanen has horrified our community. This tragic loss of life comes at a time of increasing acts of violence and hate against Muslims, mosques and other people of faith and houses of worship in the United States and abroad. This terrible act of violence can’t be separated from the current political moment, a moment where Black lives are under increased attack and where bigots like Nabra’s murderer are emboldened by anti-Black, anti-Arab, and anti-Muslim rhetoric.
The national origin and immigration status of the man who killed Nabra does not matter, he acted on vicious anti-Black and anti-Muslim racism that has become normalized today. To add insult to injury, the police of Fairfax county have not yet investigated Nabra’s murder as a hate crime, claiming it instead, as a “road rage” incident. We completely reject this false narrative put forward by the police and demand a full investigation take place treating this as the hate crime that it is.
