5/3/17 – CIOGC Malcolm X Day panel to be held May 19

In recognition of Malcolm X Day on May 19, CIOGC will be hosting a panel and discussion on the life and legacy of Malcolm X and how his work can be carried on through dedicated community service and activism.

The panelists for this event include Imam Omar Karim of the Ephraim Bahar Cultural Center, Imam Charles Muhammad of the Al Aqsa Community Center Masjid in Plainfield, Bashirah Mack of Sapelo Square – An Online Resource on Black Muslims in the U.S., and Jameel Karim, Youth Coordinator for CIOGC.

We encourage the community to come learn about Malcolm X from people whose parents and families worked alongside the Muslim activist and join us for an important discussion about how to carry on his legacy.

In 2015, CIOGC led an effort with Senator Jacqueline Collins to recognize May 19 as Malcom X Day in Illinois. The day is has since been commemorated by CIOGC through educational programs and community service.
