5/17/17 – CIOGC Legislative Agenda Update

Legislative AgendaCIOGC’s Illinois Muslim Action Day (IMAD) legislative agenda includes four bills that, if passed into law, would help advance causes most relevant the Chicagoland Muslim community, as well as other minority groups in Illinois.

The four bills on CIOGC’s legislative agenda are The Religious Garb Bill (SB1697), Ensuring Police Accountability Practices (SB0058), Combating Hate Crimes Bill (HB3711), and the Immigrant Safe Zones Act (HB0426).

1. Combating Hate Crimes (HB3711): The bill passed its first Criminal Law Committee hearing in the House, and has been placed on calendar order for a second hearing. One of CIOGC’s biggest allies in Springfield, Senator Jacqueline Collins was added as a co-sponsor on the bill along with Senator Napoleon Harris. Contact your Senator and ask them to support HB3711. Find and contact your senator!

2. Ensuring Police Accountability Practices Bill (SB0058): The bill was assigned to Judiciary-Criminal Law Committee in the House as of May 15. There has not been a date set for the first hearing, but community members should contact their Senators and ask them to support this bill. Find and contact your representative!

3. The Religious Garb Bill (SB1697): This bill has its first scheduled hearing in the house on Wednesday, May 17 at 2:00 p.m. and needs community support to do well in its first hearing. You can help by signing a witness slip in support of SB1697.

4. Immigrant Safe Zones Act (HB0426): The bill was re-referred to the rules committee in the House as of 4/28. Contact your representative and ask them to support this bill. Find and contact your representative!
