The Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago (CIOGC) and American Muslim Health Professionals (AMHP) are partnering to offer a Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Training on Saturday, February 23, 2019 at the Catholic Theological Union.

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an evidence-based 8-hour certification program, which introduces participants to risk factors and warning signs of mental health issues like anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, substance abuse, and addictions, and builds understanding of their impact.

Similar to how CPR training helps a layperson assist an individual following a heart attack, MHFA teaches non-mental health professionals how to give first aid to individuals experiencing a mental health crisis and/or who are in the early stages of a mental health disorder.

The ultimate objective is to identify and triage individuals who might be suffering from mental health issues in our homes, schools, and communities. Luminaries such as Michelle Obama have taken the training and have testified to its empowerment of individuals to help others deal with mental health issues.
