Connecting with your legislators is a powerful statement. For eight years, CIOGC has been going to Springfield with an agenda to communicate with legislators, that serve us as a State, and whom we’ve voted for. With our issues agenda, prepared by the CIOGC Legislative Committee, we present concerns and explain our position on issues that impact Illinois as a whole. CIOGC is committed to representing a collective Muslim voice in the State Capitol building and we want to be heard.

This year, we will be continuing to add pressure to pass the budget because it is impacting our social services and one of the ways we will suggest is to instate a fairer tax system. We will also be partnering with Inner-city Muslim Action Network (IMAN) on the Removing Invisible Bars Bill (SB 2282), which seeks to amend a condition of parole that incarcerates individuals within their communities, even though they are no longer inside prison. In addition, we will be pushing for two resolutions, which we will use as the springboard for next year to submit them as bills. The first is an “Illinois Stop Hate and Stand For Peace” resolution and the second is to reinstate the Muslim American Advisory Council (MAAC), which was dissolved by the Rauner administration.

This year, we are also filing two resolutions that are pertinent to today’s climate in the American electoral year. We are looking forward to presenting a resolution on reinstating the Muslim-American Advisory Council, which was dissolved under the Rauner administration, and a resolution on urging Illinois to ‘Take on Hate’. Join us on Friday, April 15 at 4:00 p.m. for our ‘Take on Hate’ rally. Register here.

For 2016, the summary of the issues agenda that the CIOGC Legislative Committee developed is below:

1. State budget.

2. Support for Illinois Senate Bill (SB) 2282 “Removing Invisible Bars Bill” (Read in January 2016), which addresses risks of re-incarceration for parolees.

3. Resolution to reinstate the Muslim American Advisory Council (MAAC).

4. Resolution on the interfaith and bi-partisan national “Take on Hate” campaign.
