12/23/15- New Coalition of Refugee Service Organizations Formed

On Tuesday, December 15, 2015, seven organizations came to the table to explore areas of collaboration to address the current needs of refugees, in Chicagoland specifically, but the implications nationally as well. Representatives from Zakat Foundation, Arab American Family Services, Muslim Women’s Resource Center, ICNA Relief, Syrian Community Network (SCN), Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR) and the Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago (CIOGC) were all present.

The goal was to understand what each organization provided, the population and numbers they served, their strengths and the kind of assistance they felt they needed. Many shared challenges were discussed and the group came to consensus on forming a coalition under the banner of CIOGC to collaborate on a legislative item on refugee services in the 2016 Illinois Muslim Action Day (IMAD) as well as come together in more meetings to outline a strategy in order to have more impact as a collective on the current state of affairs regarding refugees.
