Islamic Relief and CIOGC host event.
The Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago co-hosted the Emergency Tsunami Fundraising Dinner with Islamic Relief on Saturday, January 8, 2005. The room was filled beyond capacity when 500 Muslims came together to pledge their support at the Islamic Foundation in Villa Park. In a little over two hours, $232,000 was raised for relief of the tsunami victims.
Anwar Khan, Development Director for Islamic Relief, implored the audience to help. “It is our sunnah to be merciful,” he reminded. “We want the world to know that Islam is a religion of mercy and compassion.” Thousands of families have lost everything-their homes, their belongings and their livelihoods. One-third of the victims are children. “You cry but your tears are salty. We need fresh water to keep those kids alive.” The need is real.
Tasneem Osmani, CIOGC Treasurer, presented a check for $65,000 on behalf of the Council. She recognized Muslim Society Inc (MSI) for their contribution of $20,000, Midwest Islamic Center for $15,000, Islamic Society of Northwest Suburbs for $10,000 and all individual donors. The Council promised its continued support to this humanitarian crisis.
The Council has established a Tsunami Relief Fund and is accepting financial donations in support of the worldwide relief efforts responsive to this international tragedy. This fund is aimed at pooling tax-deductible, charitable donations to support humanitarian agencies putting together the largest aid effort in history. Mosques and Islamic centers across Chicago will focus on the situation in Asia and its victims during Friday sermons and other congregational events, and raise charitable funds for this cause.
