Immigration Reform Forum Held at the Muslim Community Center
Over 60 participants attended a forum at the MCC to learn about the impact the
McCain-Kennedy immigration proposal might potentially have on the Muslim
community. The forum, which was sponsored by the MCC and the Albany Park
Neighborhood Council, focused on educating the community on issues of
comprehensive immigration reform. Mr. Fred Tsao, the Policy Director at the
Illinois Coalition for Immigrant & Refugee Rights, presented on the details
of the Secure America and Orderly Immigration Act 2005, informing the audience
that a bi-partisan Congressional group has been interested in addressing
immigration reform this year. The second part of the forum saw participants
sharing stories on how various immigration laws have impacted their lives,
including police harassment and unnaturally slow progress on their
naturalization applications.
