The Council Meets with the Arab American Action Network
|
|
|
Last Wednesday, Ms. Hind Makki, the Council's Citizenship Campaign Outreach
Coordinator, met with Ms. Ahlam Jbara, the Family Empowerment Program Director
of the Arab American Action Network (AAAN), to discuss on combining the two
organizations' strategies to reach and educate Chicago's Muslim and Arab
immigrants on how to attain citizenship. Both the Council and AAAN are part of a
state-wide coalition, led by the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee
Rights (ICIRR), that has focused on assisting the nearly half a million
currently eligible Illinois immigrants through the citizenship process. Ms.
Makki and Ms. Jbara discussed joining together in providing English as a Second
Language classes for native Arabic speakers, civics classes accessible to Arab
and Muslim immigrants living in the southwestern suburbs of Chicago, citizenship
presentations at area mosques and coordinating a major citizenship workshop on
November 12.
Ms. Makki and the Council's citizenship team will also meet
with other organizations whose clientele is primarily Muslim, in an effort to
coordinate the citizenship campaign with all agencies and collaboratives working
toward assisting immigrants in becoming American citizens.
