On May 15, Council member organizations, MCC and ICC, participated in the Mayor’s gun control initiative. Chicagoland houses of worship opened up their doors from 12-6 PM for people to turn in their guns with no questions asked. Council Chairman, Kareem Irfan, indicated that the CIOGC was proud to have orchestrated the first-ever Muslim participation in this important social safety initiative and thanked Br. Akhter Sadiq at MCC and Br. Abdul Hai from ICC for active involvement of these mosques. The event was heavily publicized with Public Service Announcements from Chicago Police Dept. officials and key faith leaders including Council Chairman, Kareem Irfan. About 13 unlicensed guns we turned in at this inter-faith event.
