Thursday April 26, Chicago - At a Press Conference on Thursday April 27, Muslims will come together with a coalition of African, Arab, Asian, European and Latino Immigrants to affirm their pledge to the cause of justice for all. “We will be at the May 1 Rally to ask for just and respectful treatment at ports of entry and borders for all individuals. We are committed to equality for all and to pluralism as a means of getting there,” said Mr. Abdul Malik Mujahid, Chairman of the Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago.
There is a dire need for comprehensive immigration reform. Latinos contribute to the economy and should be given due recognition. They also pay taxes that translate into millions of dollars of revenue. It is only just that there be a comprehensive and humane pathway towards legalization of the millions of undocumented workers in the United States. There will be sermons at mosques throughout Chicagoland on Friday, April 28th calling on Muslims to be at the May 1 Rally. Students at the Islamic Schools have also been called on to participate.
Muslims, like Latinos, have faced undue mistreatment and abuse in the witch-hunt for terrorists since 9/11. More than 500,000 Muslims have suffered. “While some Muslims have taken legal action for what often amounts to persecution, they are the minority. It’s about time that we say no to fear, stand up for our rights and the rights of others,” said Mujahid. Currently, there are reports by Muslims and non-Muslims of years of backlog and delays to their obtaining citizenship, even when all of the rules have been obeyed, the paperwork completed and fees paid.
