|
|
|
Acting upon the proposals put forth during the recent meeting of the Council’s
leadership and Muslim educators with the CEO of Chicago Public Schools Arnie
Duncan and Manuel Medina, who oversees language and cultural education for the
CPS, the Committee has developed a pamphlet on religious sensitivities to
distributed to all Chicago public schools at the beginning of the school year.
That meeting, which was coordinated by Okab Hasan, a public school principal and
the Council’s representative from Masjid al Muhajiroun, included Dr. Talal
Sunbulli of Universal School, the principal of the Muslim Education Center
Habeeb Quadri, Ahsan Faiz from the Council of American Muslim Professionals,
along with Heba Abbasi, a member of the Council’s Executive board and a teacher
at Aqsa School, and Chairman Mujahid.
The
pamphlet will include information on prayer accommodation, clothing concerns and
gender separation accommodation in gym classes, finding alternatives to school
dances and information on social and gender concerns many Muslim parents have.
Furthermore, the pamphlet will list a set of books and references that may be
used by social studies and current events teachers.
