Council Member Meets with Senator Obama to Discuss Earthquake Response

Mrs. Tabassum Haleem, a member of the Council's House of Representatives, representing the Organization of Islamic Speakers Midwest (OISM), chaired a United Power meeting with Illinois Senator Barack Obama in Washington last Wednesday, leading a delegation that included Jackie Williams and Sal Cervantes of United Power, Jamie Geiger of Lake County United, and Matt McDermott, a United Power staff staff member. The agenda included an appeal to the senator to check into the Bush Administration's response to the earthquake in Pakistan. Mrs. Haleem presented the senator with a fact sheet on the matter. Sen. Obama said he would be in a hearing with Secretary of State Condolezza Rice later that day and would raise this issue with her and her staff.

The Organization of Islamic Speakers Midwest provides trained and certified Muslim speakers who speak on Islam and Islamic issues in both educational and commercial setting and serves the metropolitan Chicago area. The Council is a founding member of United Power for Action and Justice.
