following statement today.
The Council of Islamic Organizations Endorsed Fatwa Against Terrorism
The Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater
Chicago believes it is imperative for Muslims to go beyond just condemning
terrorism. And for this reason the Council endorses the fatwa released by the
Fiqh Council of North America against suicide bombing and terrorism.
We believe this fatwa is essentially aimed against
Osama Bin Laden and others like him who abuse the religious fatwa system as an
instrument of terrorism.
We believe suicide bombing is criminal and sinful;
killing civilians, for whatever cause, will result in God’s utter displeasure.
The Council has asked all imams to dedicate Friday
sermons to reinforce Islamic themes such as the sanctity of human life,
conflict resolution, anger management, civic responsibility, and the sinfulness
of hurting God’s creation.
We are also organizing a summit of Muslim youth in Chicago to enhance our two way
communication with them. We are also asking imams and the Muslim leadership to
be more accessible to the youth in the community.
The Council is a federation of 54 mosques, centers
and Islamic organizations serving the 400,000 Muslims in the greater Chicago area.
