Press Statement by Abdul Malik Mujahid, Chairman of the Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago read in a press conference on June 23rd 2006 in response to terrorist arrests in Miami. On behalf of the Chicago land Muslim community, I want to express our appreciation for the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to keep our country safe. Apparently, the alleged plot was stopped early in the process, before the suspects were able to obtain explosives. Thank God, those who work in the Sears Tower, Muslims as well as people of other faiths, were not in imminent danger. It is ironic that the allegations refer to the Sears Tower as a potential target, because the Sears Tower was designed by a Muslim architect, the late Fazlur Rehman Khan, may God have mercy on his soul. Muslim organizations in the US have repeatedly condemned terrorism. We condemn any attacks on civilians, and any plots to attack civilians. After a fair and open trial of the suspects, if these allegations are proven to be true, these individuals should be punished to the full extent of the law. As always, we remain willing to assist law enforcement in any way that we can. Representatives of the Council continue to meet with law enforcement officials on an ongoing basis. The Council urges the Muslim community to be cautious. Attacks on mosques often follow such news. Therefore, Muslim institutions and businesses need to be extra cautious, and to remain in contact with local law enforcement regarding security concerns.
