CIOGC Chairman Abdul Malik Mujahid Honored by Mayor

On Oct. 2, Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley recognized Abdul Malik Mujahid, chairman of the Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago, at an annual reception in honor of the contributions immigrant and refugees have made to the City of Chicago. Mujahid was one of the three honorees for this year’s reception. After accepting his award, Abdul Malik Mujahid, chairman of the Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago, called upon the audience to pray for those undocumented immigrants who are suffering in silence while the debate on immigration continues to dehumanize them. Mayor Richard M. Daley, who presented the awards to the honorees, called for a civilized debate regarding comprehensive immigration reforms being considered in Congress. Clarence Wood, chairman of the Chicago Commission on Human Relations, and Dr. Edwin Silverman, chairman of the Advisory Council on Immigrant & Refugee Affairs, also were at the event. The reception was held at the Chicago Cultural Center and was attended by more than 300 leaders representing the public and private sectors. Ngoan Le was honored for her contributions. Ngoan Le is the vice president of programs for the Chicago Community Trust, the region’s charitable endowment which, through the generosity of donors, awards more than $81 million in grants each year to thousands of area not-for-profit organizations. In 2005, she was asked by Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich to co-chair his commission on immigrant integration. In 2004, Le served as Daley’s special assistant on homelessness.
