"Torture: Illegal, Immoral and Ineffective"
Location: Founder's Lounge, Frick Center at Elmhurst College, 190 Prospect
Avenue, Elmhurst
The forum will offer suggestions for action in
legislation, public investigation, and appropriate safeguards against future
human rights abuses.
Distinguished panel members for the forum include: Anthony Ibeagha, a
torture survivor from Nigeria, Joseph Margulies, lead counsel in Supreme
Court case of Rasul v. Bush, involving the Guantanamo detainees, Dr. Antonio
Martinez, an expert on Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome and consultant to numerous
national and international organizations on issues of severe trauma, and Scott
Portman, working on projects in Iraq including torture treatment services,
detention monitoring and legal assistance for victims of gender-based
persecution. The panel will be moderated by Dori Dinsmore, the Director of
Midwest Regional Office of Amnesty International USA. Co-Sponsored by several
Amnesty International Groups in the Western Suburbs, the Office of the Chaplain
of Elmhurst College, and American Friends Service Committee. Admission is free
and the public is invited.
