Devastating and shocking deaths

Shaima Alawadi, a 32-year-old mother of five, was found unconscious about 11:15 a.m. last Wednesday by her 17-year-old daughter in the dining room of their home where she was “drowning in her own blood” after being brutally beaten to death. There was a note left nearby saying “go back to your country, you terrorist."

This vile and devastating incident comes nearly a month after the no less repugnant shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, an unarmed African-American boy in Sanford, FL who was reported to have been wearing a hooded sweatshirt when he was shot.

Since then the Trayvon Martin case and Shaima’s death has sparked numerous ‘hoodies and hijab’ parallels responses. On Twitter, the phrase Million Hijab March has garnered steam in a nod towards the Million Hoodie March organized last week in support of the family of Trayvon Martin. Facebook group "One Million Hijabs for Shaima Alawadi" has garnered over 7,000 members with the description "There should not be an outfit that screams 'kill me!' Hoodie or hijab, this needs to stop."

We need to see the murders of Trayvon Martin & Shaima Al-Awadi as a way to change the narrative about personal & institutional racism and violence in the US. We send out our heartfelt condolences to the family and the friends of both Shaim Al-Awadi, and Trayvon Martin. Their deaths underscore the great need to end violence and to strengthen our community to do all we can to create a greater sense of security and provide a safe environment for all our communities.

May Allah (SWT) shower both their family and loved ones with strength and patience in this time of sorrow and His infinite mercy and blessings. En-naa Lillah Wa En-naa Eleihi Rajioon

Join Illinois Muslims for a day at the State Capitol
Connect. Engage. Act! Tuesday, April 17th

The 4th Annual Illinois Muslim Action Day is only 20 days away! YES, the day is getting closer and closer.

We have had a successful three years; and Insh’Allah we will continue to be successful with the commitment of our community. Last year we had 1,200 Muslim Americans in the State capitol building, advocating for issues varying from public education reform, the Green Ramadan Resolution, ALLKIDS, to the IL DREAM ACT. All of which we were able to successfully push forward.

This year we expect 1,500. Illinois Muslim Action Day is for ALL our community to come together and advocate on issues affecting all Illinoisans in light of consistent issues raised. From Youth Violence, Healthcare, Anti-Islamophobia to providing opportunities for our youth in regards to the petitioning process, and law enforcement record systems. This is your opportunity to be part of making the Muslim community voice heard.

It is our duty as Muslims to connect with our elected officials, engage in policy making efforts and to act on issues that affect all!

Call to Action: Stop private prisons in Illinois

If you're like me you do not want an immigration prison in your backyard. The Corrections Corporation of America (CCA), the nation’s most notorious builder of private prisons has targeted Crete, Illinois for the building of a new immigrant detention center. SB1064 is a bill that we wrote to stop the madness, and Senator Munoz has stepped up to be our champion. The Senate vote could happen this week.

Tell your legislators now!  Vote YES on SB1064 to stop the building of private prisons in Illinois.

Mass incarceration and mass deportation are twin evils that are tearing apart Black and immigrant families. Incarceration and deportation rates are at all-time highs in America – right now. And companies like CCA are profiting off this culture of criminalization by offering worse and worse conditions at higher and higher profit margins.

Last year, legislators voted almost unanimously in the State Senate (53 to 1) to ban private prisons from coming to Illinois. Now, ICE and the federal government are trying to sneak around this law by contracting with the city of Crete rather than the state of Illinois. Close the loophole!

Tell your legislators now! Vote YES on SB1064 to stop the building of private prisons in Illinois.

Say NO to the Crete Detention Center.

Food for Life: A Human Rights Forum

On Saturday, March 24th Ahlam Jbara, CIOGC Associate Director  participated in the Inner City Muslim Action Network (IMAN) city wide forum entitled “Food For Life: A Human Right”.  The forum brought together youth and elders to discuss the challenges and share ideas.  Speakers presented on the health conditions of city communities and the role corner stores play in the increased health issues.

IMAN has been leading the efforts through the Muslim Run Campaign to inform  corner store owners of the impact their stores have on community.  IMAN released the Muslim Run principles document, drafted by campaign leaders.   This 10-point Statement of Intent lays forth the vision for the model corner store, and management at the stores that sign onto these principles are recognizing that the current model is problematic and pledging to enact real and permanent change in the coming year as part of the Muslim Run campaign.

For information, please contact us:
www.heartwomenandgirls.org
Nadiah Mohajir, Ayesha Akhtar
heartwg@gmail.com

We believe this project will be effective in starting the much needed discourse on this neglected issue. Many educators and adult allies have expressed their frustrations of being unequipped to address a sexual violence situation, or even equipped to identify it. Training like this will teach participants the importance of addressing sexual violence and will break barriers that have existed for years in the community.
This event is a partnership between HEART Women & Girls, Rape Victim Advocates, and the Rahma Network. It is sponsored by the Office on Womens Health at the Department of Health and Human Services, Chicago Foundation for Women & The Pillars Fund and is supported by the Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago (CIOGC).
