Stop the Violence and Respect the Peace
As violence continues to increase in our communities, we recognize that we must step up as faith communities, community members, and as Illinoisans.
The Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago, Leadership Development Institute and L.Y.R.I.C., are launching the “STOP the VIOLEMCE and RESPECT the PEACE” Campaign during the 23rd Annual African Festival of the Arts in Chicago’s Washington Park in September (Labor Day weekend). We will sponsor ‘The Peace Village’, which will be located near the Armory on 52nd street. The Peace Village is dedicated to Safety and Healing for victims of violence, their families, and loved ones. It will premier ‘Urban Peace Ambassadors’ Hip Hop Campaign to Stop the Violence and Respect the Peace
The Peace Village will feature a number of workshops and Violence Prevention Activities for all ages:
1. Friday will feature a Talent Show (First come First serve. All contestants receive Free Passes for Saturday. Winners become Urban Peace Ambassador inductees, and perform on Saturday.
2. Saturday will feature: Rap, Hip Hop, Foot Work Kings and Spoken Word workshops and concert.
3. On Sunday, there will be an Interfaith Prayer observance, roundtable discussion and lecture by Dr. Carl Bell on “What parents, family, mosques, churches, schools, businesses, community organizations and health agencies can do to reduce the violence and murder in our communities.”
4. Monday will feature Open Mic for the Hottest Bars on Peace and Respect
5. Friday through Monday add your ‘patch’ to the Respect the Peace Quilt.
If you are interested in supporting the Campaign, please complete the commitment card and return to the CIOGC office (231 S. State St. Suite 300, Chicago IL 60604) or fax to 312.506.0077.
