CIOGC Concerned With Hate Crimes On Houses of Worship

(Chicago, IL-August 6, 2012) - The Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago (CIOGC) is deeply concerned with the increased attacks on Muslim institutions and other houses of worship nationwide after a fire this morning destroyed a Missouri mosque that had previously been targeted by an arsonist and after yesterday's deadly shooting at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin.

These horrific attacks may be a product of the increased hate spread by people in leadership positions making false claims against Muslim Americans.  The comments by political leaders’ increases discrimination and hate in communities like Joplin, Missouri and Milwaukee Wisconsin where the shooting occurred Sunday morning.

“We pray for the safety of our brothers and sisters in Joplin and for the protection of all faith communities from hate, terrorism and violence.  We ask our law enforcement agencies and our community at large to be vigilant in order to prevent similar attacks” said Dr. Zaher Sahloul, Chairman CIOGC.

“It is sad that our communities have to be scared in their own houses of worship, we ask that people take extra precautions to ensure that our communities are safe.  Our thoughts and prayers are with the Joplin Muslim community and the Wisconsin Sikh community.” said Ahlam Jbara, Associate Director CIOGC

The CIOGC calls on leaders to stop spreading hate in our nation, the U.S. must be inclusive of all faiths and ethnic communities.
