Dear Senator _________,
As leaders from diverse faith communities throughout Cook County, we call on you to stand up for the individuals and families struggling across the state to put food on the table. As the Senate deliberates on the Farm Bill, remember the one in six people who are food insecure in Cook County, and strengthen and protect programs that serve those in poverty. Cuts to SNAP, particularly at a time of continued high unemployment and unprecedented need for food assistance, are a moral outrage.
I urge you to form a circle of protection around funding for domestic nutrition programs that help meet the nutritional needs of millions of American families. Support Senator Gillibrand’s amendment to the Farm Bill which would restore the $4.49 billion cut to SNAP and preserve these vital benefits that hungry people desperately need.
Some members of Congress have said that religious congregations and charities should be primarily responsible for feeding hungry people, but charity cannot make up the gap if we erode the strong federal safety net. If there are cuts in SNAP benefits, it will be devastating for hungry and poor Americans, and would put a huge burden on churches and charities. Fighting hunger is a partnership, and the government must fulfill its role in addressing the issue of hunger in our state, and the nation.
Our faith calls for us to stand up against injustice. Budget and policy choices that cause food lines to grow longer during a time of great need are unjust. Congress needs to take responsibility and continue helping hungry people in our nation.
