END TO INNER-CITY VIOLENCE

(Chicago, IL-May 30, 2012) - The Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago wishes to express their profound disappointment and concern regarding the ongoing crisis and the rise of deaths seen in Chicago this month of May. More than a total of 40 shootings were reported during the four-day Memorial Day weekend alone, bringing up the total number of shootings this year alone to 851. One of the many shootings included, a 6-year-old girl who was playing outside her house caught in between the crossfires of a drive by shooting.

These are not isolated tragedies. The Council recognizes this incident as reflective of an already toxic environment in which we live in that is driven by the same constellation which breeds racism, religious discrimination, sexism and poverty.

We cannot tolerate any more suffering and killing in our very own backyards. Whether it's the incessant teen shootings within our impoverished inner-city neighborhoods or the creation of a new private prison in IL. There needs to be an increase of collective efforts to intervene and prevent violence in the inner city to stop the violence and create healthy neighborhoods.
