Among the many highlights of the ISNA weekend was the Interfaith Unity Banquet, held on July 4th. The 13th annual banquet attracted leaders from diverse faiths representing national and local organizations and institutions along with government officials, including the Consulate General of France.
"It is important for Muslims to come out of isolation and join the community at large," said Dr. Shakir Moiduddin, the Interfaith Committee co-chairperson for the CIOGC. “Muslims need to join people from other faith groups to serve the community.”
ISNA and CIOGC presented the 2010 Unity award to the Northern Illinois Conference
of the United Methodist Church for its outstanding contributions to interfaith relations, dedication to the advancement of peace, justice, and community harmony, and its advocacy and sincere friendship for the American Muslim community. The NIC consists of 400 local churches with about 125,000 members. Muslims have worked closely with the United Methodist Church in campaigning for social justice, peace, and equity.
The banquet had a fantastic line up of speakers including Dr. Mattson, Shaykh Ali Gomaa, Grand Mufti of Egypt, Dr. Michael Kinnamon, General Secretary, National
Council of Churches and Rabbi Rabbi Jeremy Schneider, Union for Reform Judaism.
The Council’s Interfaith Committee is now busy planning for the annual interfaith Iftar with the Catholic Church, which the Cardinal George is expected to attend.
