Chicago, IL | June 15, 2010 | The Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago (CIOGC) has established a fund to collect donations to help in the search and rescue efforts of 9 year old Sofia Khan who went missing in Lake Michigan on Wednesday June 9.
Sofia tragically got separated from her father during a family vacation in Wisconsin. She still has not been found. The Coast Guard and other authorities, assisted by neighborhood volunteers, spent 2 days in an intensive search and rescue effort by land, sea, and air.
Family, friends, community members, and local non-profit organizations have continued the search of the water and coastline, with dozens of volunteers driving hours to Sheboygan County to help in the rescue efforts.
First and foremost, the family has asked everyone for their duas for their daughter and prayers that she is returned to them. Although the family has not asked for donations, many individuals have expressed interest in donating money since they are unable to go up to the Wisconsin area to help in person. Thus, the family has arranged with the Council to accept tax-deductible donations on their behalf from interested people from all faith communities. All money received will be used to pay for the effort to find Sofia.
This is the only fund authorized by the Khan family to receive donations in honor of Sofia. Any money or supplies that remain after the recovery effort will be donated to charitable causes in Sofia's honor.
You can also mail checks to CIOGC, 231 S. State Street, Suite 300, Chicago, IL 60604 or call the Council at 312-506-0070 to pay with a credit card over the phone.
